Baseball Recap: Churchill Drops Season-High Score on Springfield

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Churchill). They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over the Springfield Millers on Thursday. The Lancers have beaten the Millers the last seven times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Millers has come to flipping the script.

Jace Litten made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over four innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Churchill's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 4-9 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carlos Barajas, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jayden Arbogast, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Churchill always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .629. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matchups.

Churchill's victory bumped their record up to 7-10. As for Springfield, their loss was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-13.

Churchill will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Millers: the pair will be back at it again later today.
