Preview: Covenant Day Lions vs. Charlotte Christian Knights
The Covenant Day Lions will head out on the road to take on the Charlotte Christian Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Covenant Day has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 171 points over their last three matches.
Last Tuesday, Covenant Day humbled Charlotte Country Day School with a 61-32 victory. Given Covenant Day's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while Charlotte Country Day School is ranked 85th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Michael Marcus Jr. was his usual excellent self, scoring 16 points along with two steals. He is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyree White, who scored nine points along with six assists and three steals.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Christian's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their ninth straight defeat. They fell just short of Charlotte Latin by a score of 63-60. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Charlotte Christian in their matchups with Charlotte Latin: they've now lost eight in a row.
Covenant Day pushed their record up to 20-7 with that victory, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.6 points per game. As for Charlotte Christian, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 14 of their last 15 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-21 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Covenant Day against Charlotte Christian when the teams last played back in January as the squad secured a 73-41 win. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Charlotte Christian's Marshall Nicholson, who scored 16 points.
