Softball Recap: Morton Comes Up Short

Morton extended their losing streak to seven on Friday, dropping their season record down to 6-26 in the process. They lost 9-1 to the Dunlap Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-0 back in April.

As for Dunlap, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 26-5. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won 12 games by six runs or more so far this season.

For Dunlap's part, Kaitlyn Atkinson made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and only one walk). Atkinson has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Rachel Mies and Gabby Drake did most of the damage at the plate: Mies went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double, while Drake went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Mies a new career-high. Lexi Hamer was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs.

Morton and Dunlap are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Potters will head out to face off against Washington at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Dunlap, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Galesburg at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
