League recap: Norfolk Christian wins, gets boost in standings

Norfolk Christian was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in VISFA Tidewater. The Ambassadors beat Atlantic Shores Christian 33-25 earlier in the week.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Portsmouth Christian, 44-7. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Saints.

Ty Smith provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Greenbrier Christian Academy bested Hampton Roads Academy. He completed one pass for eight yards and also ran for 219 yards. Smith's favorite target this week was Bryce Myers, who caught three passes for 107 yards.

Tim Burns put up the best numbers through the air as Nansemond-Suffolk Academy beat the Patriots. He finished with a total of six completions for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Burns' favorite target this week was John Mobley, who caught three passes for 46 yards.

Greenbrier Christian Academy's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Gators feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Josh Miller has thrown for 509 yards and nine touchdowns this season, while Myers has 16 catches for 427 yards. Smith leads the league in rushing with 930 yards.

The Gators' Smith needs only 70 yards against Bishop Sullivan Catholic next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

A big matchup in VISFA Tidewater this week will be when Norfolk Academy takes on Lew Johnston's team. The Bulldogs are currently in second, while the Saints are in third.

Norfolk Academy moved up to 209 from 237 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Steve Monninger's team climbed the ranks as a result of a 32-6 win over Covenant.
