MaxPreps Northern California Boys Basketball Top 30 rankings

As the playoffs start, the top four ranked teams are top seeds, each seeking the first of multiple championships.

The playoffs are here, in full force. The top two ranked teams here are top seeds in the North Coast Section, over two divisions, and the No. 3 and No. 4 teams hail as top seeds in the Sac-Joaquin Section's highest classification.
In other words, it's go time.

1. (Last week 1) Salesian College Preparatory (Richmond), 27-1
Section: North Coast
League: Tri-County Rock
Coach: Bill Mellis
Update: The Pride have not lost to anyone in state and are riding a 19-game winning streak. They are the No. 1 seed in the North Coast Section Division III playoffs with an opening bye. Star guard James Akinjo eclipsed the 1,500-point mark for his career.

2. (2) Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland), 21-5
Section: North Coast
League: West Alameda Foothill
Coach: Lou Richie
Update: The Dragons are on a 16-game winning streak and earned the top seed in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs. They open against Mission (San Jose).

3. (3) Sheldon (Sacramento), 22-4
Section: Sac-Joaquin
League: Delta
Coach: Joey Rollings
Update: The Huskies have won 16 consecutive games and earned the top seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs, opening against Edison (Stockton). Sheldon has won 50 consecutive Delta League games.



4. (4) Modesto Christian (Modesto), 24-3
Section: Sac-Joaquin
League: Modesto Metro
Coach: Brice Fantazia
Update: The Crusaders have won 11 consecutive games and will roar into next season with a league winning streak fast approaching 200. They are the No. 2 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs, having won 18 banners over several divisions. Junior Ballard leads the team in scoring at 16.6 a game. Modesto Christian extended its state-record league winning streak to 184. The team will compete this postseason with Jairol Red in mind. The star for the Crusaders' 33-0 team of 1997 died from a rare form of cancer.

5. (5) Capital Christian (Sacramento), 20-7
Section: Sac-Joaquin
League: Golden Empire
Coach: McCall Wollman
Update: Twice a NorCal Open Division entry, the Cougars are among the favorites in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I race, having split nonleague games with Sheldon. CC opens with Vacaville.

6. (6) Folsom, 23-4
Section: Sac-Joaquin
League: Sierra Foothill
Coach: Mike Wall
Update: The Bulldogs aim to win another Sac-Joaquin Section championship in a loaded Division I field that includes Sheldon, Modesto Christian, Capital Christian, Sacramento and a host of others. They open against River City (West Sacramento).

7. (7) Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose), 21-3
Section: Central Coast
League: West Catholic Athletic
Coach: Patrick Schneider
Update: The Bells earned the No. 1 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division and open against rival Serra. Bellarmine won the WCAL with a 13-1 record.

8. (8) Menlo School (Atherton), 23-1
Section: Central Coast
League: West Bay
Coach: Keith Larsen
Update: Winners of 17 consecutive games, the Knights earned the No. 2 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs and open against storied Mitty (San Jose). Joe Foley leads Menlo in scoring (16.8).

9. (9) Palo Alto, 22-2
Section: Central Coast
League: DeAnza
Coach: Peter Diepenbrock
Update: Winners of 20 consecutive games, the Vikings earned the No. 3 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs and start with St. Ignatius. One loss was to top-ranked Salesian, 65-57.



10. (11) Las Lomas (Walnut Creek), 24-2
Section: North Coast
League: Diablo Foothill
Coach: Brian Dietschy
Update: The Knights earned the No. 2 seed in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs and open against Northgate. They won the league title at 9-1, just ahead of Clayton Valley Charter.

11. (12) Clayton Valley Charter (Concord), 24-2
Section: North Coast
League: Diablo Foothill
Coach: Eric Bamberger
Update: Despite placing second in the league to Las Lomas, but also beating Las Lomas, the Ugly Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs and start with a bye.

12. (10) Dublin, 24-4
Section: North Coast
League: East Bay
Coach: Tom Costello
Update: The Gaels had their 19-game winning streak snapped by Amador Valley, 69-68, and earned the No. 2 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs, starting with a bye.

13. (13) Saint Francis (Mountain View), 18-6
Section: Central Coast
League: West Catholic Athletic
Coach: Mike Motil
Update: The Lancers placed second to Bellarmine in the WCAL and earned the No. 4 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division field, opening against Sequoia. Coach Motil has won a ton of games here, including going 30-3 in 2009 and 30-4 in 2010 and 25-3 in 2015.

14. (15) Heritage (Brentwood), 24-2
Section: North Coast
League: Bay Valley
Coach: Pat Cruickshank
Update: The winning streak is 13 for the Patriots, who went unbeaten in league play and earned the No. 3 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs, opening against San Leandro. The losses were to ranked Dublin and Serra.

15. (16) Berkeley, (21-5)
Section: North Coast
League: West Alameda Foothill
Coach: Ralph Fields
Update: Two losses were to O'Dowd, and the Yellowjackets now prepare for Grenada as the No. 4 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs.



16. (17) Sacramento, 23-4
Section: Sac-Joaquin
League: Metropolitan
Coach: Earl Allen
Update: The Dragons went unbeaten in league play and are the No. 5 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs, a field that includes higher-ranked Sheldon, Modesto Christian, Folsom and Capital Christian.

17. (14) De La Salle (Concord), 20-7
Section: North Coast
League: Bay Valley
Coach: Justin Argenal
Update: The Spartans are the No. 5 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs, having won their share of banners over the decades, including last season.

18. (18) St. Ignatius (San Francisco), 16-8
Section: Central Coast
League: West Catholic Athletic
Coach: Rob Marcaletti
Update: The Wildcats are the No. 6 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs and start with No. 3 Palo Alto. The team is talented but not always consistent.

19. (19) Serra (San Mateo), 15-9
Section: Central Coast
League: West Catholic Athletic
Coach: Chuck Rapp
Update: The Padres closed league play with a three-game winning streak and now prepare for rival and top-seeded Bellarmine in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs.

20. University (San Francisco), 26-2
Section: North Coast
League: Bay Counties West
Coach: Randy Bessoio
Update: The Red Devils are the top seed in the Division V playoffs with a good resume that includes close losses to higher-ranked Menlo and Serra. Coach Bessoio has been at the helm since 2005-06, and this figures to be his best team.
