Softball Recap: Discovery Takes a Loss

Discovery had lost 13 straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 2-14 to make it 14. They lost 18-2 to the All Saints' Academy Saints. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Saints this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 19-7 on April 2nd.

Allie Chalmers was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.

As for All Saints' Academy, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-9 record. Their offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last three games.

On All Saints' Academy's side, Haleigh Finnigan made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Finnigan has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in both of her plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olivia Chadwick, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with seven RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ellie Groseclose, who went 2-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Discovery and All Saints' Academy are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Spartans will challenge Lake Placid at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The Dragons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.43 runs per game on average), something Discovery will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for All Saints' Academy, they will square off against Oasis Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The Saints' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 10.9 runs per game this season.
