Basketball Recap: Miami Country Day Comes Up Short

After flying high against Benjamin last Wednesday, Miami Country Day came back down to earth. The Miami Country Day Spartans lost to the North Broward Prep Eagles on the road by a 80-66 margin on Friday. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.

Despite the loss, Miami Country Day still got an impressive performance from Miguel Orbe, who went 7 of 9 from beyond the arc on his way to 30 points and six rebounds. Orbe has become a key player for Miami Country Day: the team is 15-3 when he posts at least 25 points, but 1-2 otherwise. Daltyn Simon was another key player, putting up 15 points and eight boards.

North Broward Prep got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Samuel Cano out in front who went 7 for 11 en route to 21 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Cano a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Smith, who posted 18 points and seven boards.

Miami Country Day has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 16-5 record this season. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 38.5% in those games and 28.2% outside of them. As for North Broward Prep, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 12-11.

Miami Country Day has already played their next game, a 69-67 defeat against NSU University on the 25th. As for North Broward Prep, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 57-45 loss against Saint Andrew's on the 25th.
