Basketball Game Preview: Mission Bay Buccaneers vs. Cathedral Catholic Dons

The Mission Bay Buccaneers will take on the Cathedral Catholic Dons at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Mission Bay took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They put the hurt on Scripps Ranch with a sharp 63-42 victory. The Buccaneers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine contests by 20 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Cathedral Catholic's game on Friday was all tied up 32-32 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They walked away with a 65-58 win over University City. Given the Dons' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 96th, while the Centurions are ranked 232nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mission Bay better keep an eye on Patrick O'Brien. He was instrumental in Cathedral Catholic's win, putting up 18 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Steven Evans-Glynn, who posted 12 points and five rebounds.

Mission Bay pushed their record up to 13-4 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 23.8 points. As for Cathedral Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.

Mission Bay couldn't quite finish off Cathedral Catholic when the teams last played back in January of 2024 and fell 59-56. Can Mission Bay avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
