League recap: Calhoun City tops Okolona to extend winning streak

2A Region 4 recap November 5, 2013

Calhoun City added to the longest winning streak in 2A Region 4 this week by beating Okolona, 26-25. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.

Calhoun City and the Chieftains played the closest game in the league this week, with Calhoun City eventually emerging with a 26-25 victory. Chakel Gates threw for 173 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 44 yards in the win.

Perry Liles' team's dynamic duo of Gates and Lavarious Varnado proved tough for Okolona to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Travone Petty helped Calhoun City's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 63 yards.

Eupora's Trey Pittman and Corson Gunn led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Pittman has thrown for 1,287 yards this season, while Gunn has 28 catches for 465 yards. Deangelo Liggins from East Webster leads the league in rushing with 809 yards.

The Eagles took down the Wolverines 35-18 last week, the largest margin of any game.
