Football Preview: Bowie Volunteers vs. Martin Warriors
Bowie hasn't had much luck against Martin recently, but that could start to change on Friday. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and square off against one another at 7:00 p.m. Both are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Bowie is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn't be stopped last Friday as they easily beat Sam Houston 55-14 on the road. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 41-7.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Bowie to victory, but perhaps none more so than Larry Nichols, who threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns on only 18 passes. Another pass catcher making a difference was Dilon Tallie, who picked up 177 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Bowie was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 222 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 187 rushing yards in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Martin won against Lamar back in September with 55 points and they decided to stick to that point total again last Friday. Martin blew past Grand Prairie 55-20 on the road. Given the Warriors' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 127th, while the Gophers are ranked 635th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Brooks Brigance was a one-man wrecking crew for Martin as he rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries, and also threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns on only eight passes. Trantan Miles was Brigance's top target, picking up 125 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Bowie's win bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Martin, the victory made it two in a row for them and also bumps their season record up to 2-3.
Friday's contest might be decided in the on the ground. Bowie has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 212.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Martin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 189.8. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
