Preview: O'Neill Eagles vs. Wayne Blue Devils
The O'Neill Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Wayne Blue Devils at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nebraska (O'Neill is ranked 72nd, while Wayne is ranked 74th).
A well-balanced attack led O'Neill over West Point-Beemer in every quarter on their way to victory on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that O'Neill blew West Point-Beemer out of the water with a 28-0 final score. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point O'Neill had established a 26 point advantage.
O'Neill can attribute much of their success to Porter Mathews, who rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. O'Neill also got help from Pryor Mathews who showed off his sure hands for 85 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Wayne's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight loss. They were beaten by Norfolk Catholic 59-7.
Despite the loss, Wayne got a solid performance out of Garrett Schultz, who rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.
O'Neill's win bumped their season record to 4-4 while Wayne's defeat dropped theirs to 1-7.
O'Neill was taken down by Wayne 35-2 in their previous meeting back in October of 2022. Thankfully for O'Neill, Ashton Munsell (who rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries, and also picked up 50 receiving yards) won't be suiting up this time.
