Volleyball Recap: Bassett's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

If Bassett was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Martinsville on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Bengals fell just short of the Mecklenburg County Phoenix by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. The Bengals' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Bassett came incredibly close to winning: the sets they lost were decided by three points or less. The match finished with set scores of 23-25, 25-22, 28-26, 20-25, 15-12.

Maggie Cockram paced Bassett's offense, picking up 29 kills. Cockram got some help from Sarah Campbell and her 49 assists.

It was another big night for Aubree Wilbourne, who had 42 digs and two aces for Mecklenburg County. Those 42 digs gave Wilbourne a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Aliza Hatcher, who had 16 assists.

Bassett now has a losing record of 4-5. As for Mecklenburg County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-6.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Bassett is set to square off against their familiar foe Magna Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mecklenburg County will challenge rival Halifax County at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
