Football Recap: Scranton Comes Up Short

Scranton had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 2-8 to make it four. They were dealt a 49-19 loss at the hands of the Delaware Valley Warriors. The Knights were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 49-6.

When it comes to explaining why Scranton lost, don't look at Brody Coyle. Despite the final result, he threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 passes. Coyle's passing game has become a key predictor of the Knights' success: the team is 2-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 0-7 otherwise.

Scranton didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Alex Esposito and Giovanni Garcia.

As for Delaware Valley, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-5 record this season. Given their advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 196th, while Scranton is ranked 423rd) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Delaware Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Devin Estevez led the charge by rushing for 82 yards and a pair of scores on only six carries. Estevez also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack and making two total tackles. Michael Iuzzolino was in the mix too, providing Delaware Valley with two TDs.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Scranton will take on Williamsport at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. As for Delaware Valley, they will challenge Pittston at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st.
