Volleyball Recap: South Mecklenburg Takes a Loss

After flying high against Ballantyne Ridge last Tuesday, South Mecklenburg came back down to earth. South Mecklenburg took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Palisades Pumas on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Sabres of the 3-1 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 25-9, 23-25, 25-16.

Despite the loss, South Mecklenburg still got an impressive performance from Phoenix Modie, who had 20 digs, 12 kills, seven blocks, and six aces. Those 20 digs gave Modie a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Balen Spry, who had 11 digs and two assists.

Modie wasn't the only good server: South Mecklenburg was lethal from the service line and finished the game with ten aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least ten aces in three consecutive matchups.

South Mecklenburg's defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 4-2. As for Palisades, their win ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-2.

South Mecklenburg didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-2 loss against Ardrey Kell on the 25th. Palisades has also already played their next game (against Ballantyne Ridge), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
