Thunderbird is 0-4 against Coconino since April of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Thunderbird Titans will head out on the road to face off against the Coconino Panthers at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Coconino is hoping to do on Wednesday what Yuma couldn't on Monday: put an end to Thunderbird's winning streak, which now stands at four games. Everything went Thunderbird's way against Yuma as Thunderbird made off with a 16-2 victory.
Evan Turner tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits.
On the hitting side, Thunderbird got a big performance out of Brooke Casey, who scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Casey is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stolen at least one in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Rachel Cavanaugh, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, while Coconino put up plenty of runs on Monday, the same can't be said for Mohave. Coconino blew past Mohave 12-0. The win was nothing new for Coconino as they're now sitting on 12 straight.
Kaitlyn Tso made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Tso was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
In other batting news, Sophie Monsman was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a triple, and a run. Danica Kern was another key contributor, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Thunderbird is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 14 games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-8 record this season. As for Coconino, their victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 19-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Thunderbird has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Coconino struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.9. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Thunderbird suffered a grim 24-1 defeat to Coconino when the teams last played back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Thunderbird, KodyLynn Watson (who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with a home run, four RBI, and two runs) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
