Thursday just wasn't the day for Berchmans Academy's offense. They lost 16-0 to Carencro on Thursday. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Saints' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
For Carencro's part, Jacob Bernard made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Bernard also tossed two walks, which is notable because Carencro is undefeated when he allows at most two walks, but 2-4 otherwise. Bernard was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, Caden Cormier was a standout: he got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Carson Gurzi, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Carencro always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .778. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
The victory (which was Carencro's third in a row) raised their record to 5-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Berchmans Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.
Friday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Berchmans Academy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .543. However, it's not like Carencro struggles in that department as they've averaged .497. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
