California state volleyball playoff brackets

Open Division features seven teams featured in the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings.

The California Interscholastic Federation released the state volleyball playoff brackets on Sunday.

The race to the state finals at Santiago Canyon College in Orange begins this coming week and culminates in six championship matches over two days on Nov. 21 and 22.

The Open Division bracket features seven teams in the MaxPreps Top 25, including No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) and No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana). Also competing for the Open Division title are No. 6 Torrey Pines (San Diego), No. 8 Marymount (Los Angeles), No. 10 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), No. 16 Redondo Union (Redondo Beach) and No. 25 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), the defending Open Division champion. Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach), which had been ranked much of the season, also is in the bracket and sits just outside the MaxPreps Top 25.

Sierra Canyon grabbed the top seed in Southern California after its 3-1 win over Mater Dei in the Southern Section Division 1 final on Saturday. The Trailblazers take on Mira Costa in the opening round on Wednesday. The Monarchs are the two-seed and play Redondo, while San Diego Section Open Division champion Torrey Pines is the three-seed and battle San Juan Hills (San Juan Capistrano). Cathedral is the four-seed and takes on Marymount.



Archbishop Mitty is the Northern California Open Division one-seed and takes on Redwood (Larkspur) in the opening round.

Defending champions include Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) (Open), Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates) (D-I), San Ramon Valley (Danville) (D-II), Central Valley Christian (Visalia) (D-III), South Pasadena (D-IV) and Immanuel (Reedley) (D-V).
