Anders Broman explodes for 71 points

Junior guard Anders Broman erupted for a prolific 71 points on Saturday, yet it wasn't enough as Lakeview Christian Academy (Duluth, Minn.) was handed a 114-110 loss by Melrose (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon.

Broman's total is No. 2 in Minnesota history. The record is 90 points, which was set by Cash Eggleston of Minnesota Transitions (Minneapolis, Minn.) in 2005. Broman also is No. 2 in state career scoring and this year already has amassed 1,040 points. He is averaging 45 points for the year.

The young sharpshooter drilled 8-of-13 shots from 3-point range, 13-of-14 from the free throw line and shot an overall 67 percent from the field. He scored 47 points in the second half to bring the Lions back from a 16-point deficit and enable them to briefly take the lead. He also had to take over point guard duties during the final 10 minutes when his freshman brother, Bjorn, got into foul trouble. He finished with nine assists.

Bjorn, who had 14 assists, told the Duluth News Tribune, "I see him all the time, so I know how good he can shoot, but today he was lights out. I can tell when he's feeling it (in warmups) and today he was feeling it a lot."



Though overshadowed, junior Scottie Stone tied the Melrose record with 39 points. Isaac Sawyer finished with 30.

Melrose coach Ryan Dusha summed up the wild contest, which used a shot clock, when he told the Saint Cloud Times, "It was just an absolute blast to be a part of."

*In girls basketball, Mansfield Summit (Arlington, Texas) outlasted defending state champion Canyon (Texas) 57-55 in four overtimes during the Class 4A Region I semifinals. The marathon featured 14 ties and 16 lead changes.

Shayna Jackson scored two free throws with 20 seconds left to force the second overtime, then later made two more to provide the winning margin in the fourth extra period. Senior Ashley Eli, who has signed with North Carolina State, played the entire game, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds.

* Alexis Jones exploded for 44 points to lead MacArthur (Irving, Texas) to a 76-62 victory over Coronado (Lubbock, Texas) during the Class 5A Region I semifinals. The Duke University recruit also dished out six assists.

MacArthur, the defending Class 5A state champion, however, was eliminated in the title game by once-beaten Duncanville (Texas) 62-55 in a game which may have determined the 2012 state champion.
