Football Game Preview: Waterbury Career Academy Spartans vs. Ansonia Chargers

Waterbury Career Academy is 0-8 against Ansonia since September of 2016 but things could change on Saturday. The Spartans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Chargers at 6:00 p.m. Ansonia took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Waterbury Career Academy, who comes in off a win.

Waterbury Career Academy will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up 12 points two weeks ago, then bounced right back against Crosby on Saturday. The Spartans took their matchup with ease, bagging a 34-6 win over the Bulldogs. The victory continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won seven in a row.

Joshua Myers went supernova, picking up 176 receiving yards and two scores. That's the most receiving yards he has posted since back in October of 2024.

Another reason for the win was Waterbury Career Academy's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for eight sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Jameer Guest and Isaias Xavier Rivera, who racked up five sacks between them. Myers got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, while it was all tied up 14-14 at halftime, Ansonia was not quite Seymour's equal in the second half last Thursday. They took a 21-14 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wildcats. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Chargers came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked 20th, while the Wildcats are ranked 66th).

Waterbury Career Academy's win bumped their record up to 2-0. As for Ansonia, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Waterbury Career Academy took a serious blow against Ansonia when the teams last played back in October of 2024, falling 56-29. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Spartans were down 35-13.
