Softball Recap: Joliet Central Steelmen vs. Plainfield Central Wildcats
Joliet Central had lost 25 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped down to 4-19 to make it 26. They came up short against the Plainfield Central Wildcats, falling 22-2. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Steelmen couldn't push the score so high this time.
As for Plainfield Central, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 16-8. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won 12 games by eight runs or more so far this season.
For Plainfield Central's part, Kierney Latarewicz looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Latarewicz has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Emma Sommerfeld was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. She continues to improve, besting her previous run total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ali Houlihan, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs.
Looking ahead, Joliet Central will square off against Plainfield South at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cougars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.78 runs per game on average), something the Steelmen will no doubt try to take advantage of.
