Westview is 2-8 against Mt. Carmel since May of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Wolverines will head out to square off against the Sundevils at 4:00 p.m. Westview is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
On Friday, Westview came up short against Carlsbad and fell 6-3.
Westview got a good showing from Kaya Rodriguez, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Rodriguez has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single earned run in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Abby Peake was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Kamryn Gonzalez was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Mt. Carmel posted their closest victory since March 19th on Friday. They skirted past Ramona 7-6. The Sundevils haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Sirena Castro looked comfortable as she tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
At the plate, Kaili Martha and Jordan Grimaud did most of the damage at the plate: Martha went 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Grimaud went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave Grimaud a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Clara Carter, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Mt. Carmel kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in three consecutive contests.
Mt. Carmel now has a winning record of 10-9. As for Westview, their loss dropped their record down to 12-7-1.
Westview's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's game. The Wolverines have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Mt. Carmel, though, as they've been averaging only 0.7 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Westview continue to outrun the ball?
