Football Recap: Smyrna Sets Scoring Season-High Against Sussex Central

Smyrna extended their winning streak to five on Friday, bumping them up to 6-4. They enjoyed a cozy 54-40 victory over the Sussex Central Golden Knights. The Eagles' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Smyrna's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Drew Marks, who threw for 286 yards and six TDs while completing 85% of his passes. Marks' passing game has become a key predictor of the Eagles' success: the team is 5-2 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. Kahmaj Kearney was Marks' top target, picking up 99 receiving yards and one score, while also rushing for 104 yards on only nine carries.

Smyrna was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 253 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.

Smyrna didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Eli Mann and Mason Spears.

As for Sussex Central, they dropped their record down to 4-6 with the loss, which was their third straight at home. Those home defeats can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 29.7 points over those games.

When it comes to explaining why Sussex Central lost, don't look at Josiah Cannon. Despite the final result, he threw for 117 yards and three touchdowns on only ten passes.
