Softball Recap: Father McGivney Catholic Takes a Loss

Father McGivney Catholic extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 7-12 in the process. They came up short against the Hillsboro Hiltoppers, falling 12-1. The Griffins were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hiltoppers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Father McGivney Catholic saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alexa Jones, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

As for Hillsboro, their record now sits at 7-11. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for they considering their two-run performance the matchup before.

On Hillsboro's side, Anika Camp made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Camp has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Hillsboro got a massive performance out of Lainey Lessman, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most runs Lessman has posted since back in March. Kaya Connor also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.

Father McGivney Catholic has already played their next game, a 12-1 victory against Nokomis on the 9th. As for Hillsboro, they will square off against Staunton at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Bulldogs' pitching crew has only allowed 1.7 runs per game this season, so the Hiltoppers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
