Recap: St. Mary's Rams vs. Los Gatos Wildcats

The St. Mary's Rams had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.2 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. It was close, but they capped 2023 with a 55-52 victory over Los Gatos. That's another feather in the cap for St. Mary's, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.

St. Mary's got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Daniel Huerta out in front who scored 16 points along with five rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Huerta has scored at least 25% of St. Mary's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Cayden Ward, who scored 18 points along with six assists and five rebounds.

Los Gatos' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Scotty Brennan, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Anthony Martin was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.

St. Mary's win bumped their record up to 11-2. As for Los Gatos, their loss dropped their record down to 7-3.

St. Mary's road trip will continue as they head out to face Half Moon Bay at 8:00 p.m. on December 30th. Half Moon Bay will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 207th, while St. Mary's is ranked 38th). Los Gatos won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Pioneer at 5:00 p.m. on December 30th.
