Basketball Recap: Maya Mccorkle and Madison Drayton Secure Win for Cannon

On Friday, the Cannon Cougars didn't have too much trouble with the South Garner Titans as they won 74-59. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked eighth, while the Titans are ranked 91st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cannon was led to victory by Madison Drayton and Maya Mccorkle. Drayton dropped a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Mccorkle went 6 of 10 on her way to 17 points along with seven assists and seven boards. That's the most points Mccorkle has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Busby, who posted 12 points.

Cannon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in eight consecutive matchups.

Taylor Moore and Chloe Crawford certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Moore went 8 of 13 on her way to 19 points and eight rebounds, while Crawford had 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Darden, who put up ten points and four steals.

Cannon's win bumped their record up to 13-4. As for South Garner, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.

Cannon and Princess Anne will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. One thing working in Princess Anne's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season. As for South Garner, they will square off against Willow Spring at 7:00 p.m. on January 3, 2025. South Garner is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season.
