Basketball Recap: Carroll Tigers vs. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles
If the Carroll Tigers were feeling good off their 85-39 takedown of the Corpus Christi Moody Trojans last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Carroll took a 85-66 bruising from the Eagles on Friday. While losing is never fun, Carroll can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 458th, while the Eagles are ranked 170th).
Several Tigers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Braedon Gomez, who scored 20 points. Gomez is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last six games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Milo Gonzales, who scored 17 points.
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial found their leader in underclassman Sean Mondragon, who scored 34 points along with six rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mondragon has scored all season. CJ Vela was another key contributor, scoring 19 points along with four steals.
Carroll's loss dropped their record down to 16-9. As for Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 20-8.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Flour Bluff the next time they take the court. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial will host Flour Bluff at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Carroll will head out to face them at 7:30 p.m. on February 6th.
