The Jackson Central Merry Cougars had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Haywood and snuck past 48-45. For Jackson Central Merry, this counts as revenge for the 86-25 defeat Haywood walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2016.
Haywood's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Camariya Woodland, who scored 13 points along with 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Woodland scored a full 28.9% of Haywood's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Zamaria Murphy was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with 7 rebounds.
Jackson Central Merry's win bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Haywood, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 0-2.
Jackson Central Merry will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Jackson South Side at 6:00 p.m. on December 8th. As for Haywood, they will face off against White Station at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
