Softball Recap: 16 Straight Road Victories for University

University proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by nine) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 victory over the Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights. The Hawks have beaten the Maroon Knights the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Maroon Knights has come to flipping the script.

Maddie Campbell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on four hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lexi Elza was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted over her last 12 contests. Another player making a difference was Whitney Cox, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI and one double.

University pushed their record up to 17-3-1 with the win, which was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Wheeling Central Catholic, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-5 record this season.

University has already played their next game, a 19-1 win against Buckhannon-Upshur on the 28th. As for Wheeling Central Catholic, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 1-0 defeat against Martins Ferry on the 5th.
