Softball Preview: Rampart Rams vs. Widefield Gladiators

Suggested Video

The Rampart Rams will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against the Widefield Gladiators at 10:00 a.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Having struggled with eight losses in a row, Rampart finally turned things around against Doherty on Thursday. They put the hurt on the Spartans with a sharp 14-6 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Rams have posted since September 23rd.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Widefield). They never let Palmer onto the board and left with a 20-0 victory on Thursday. The Gladiators might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 games by seven runs or more this season.

Olivia McEwen made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5 strikeouts per game. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Brooke Foster was incredible, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with a home run, three runs, and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Savanna Mitton, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Widefield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .759. The last time their OBP was this high was back in October of 2023.

Rampart's win ended a nine-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-16. As for Widefield, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 17-5.
