Basketball Recap: Cleveland Starts Season with Defeat on the Road

Cleveland had to start their season on the road on Monday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They were dealt an 81-44 loss at the hands of the Crespi Celts. The Cavaliers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 41-20.

Several Cavaliers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was TJ Wansa, who posted 13 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Anthony Reyes, who put up nine points.

Crespi's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Phoenix Smith led the charge by shooting 86% from the field on his way to 16 points and seven steals. What's more, Smith posted three assists, the most he's had since back in December of 2024. Carter Barnes was another key player, going 5-for-9 to rack up 14 points and four steals.

Looking ahead, Cleveland will face off against Cathedral at 8:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Crespi, they will take on Mater Dei at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
