Grand Ledge has gone a perfect 8-0 against Waverly recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Comets will square off against the Warriors at 4:00 p.m. Grand Ledge's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Waverly's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Grand Ledge's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Saturday's struggle, when West Ottawa hitters got past them. The Comets lost 12-1 to the Panthers on Saturday. The Comets' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Waverly). They blew past Eastern 18-2 on Saturday. Considering the Warriors have won four matches by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Tre Combs made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits (and not a single walk). Combs was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Waverly got a massive performance out of Jackson Gomez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Iggy Arroyo was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Waverly always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .632. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Waverly's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Grand Ledge, their loss dropped their record down to 3-2.
Grand Ledge was able to grind out a solid win over Waverly when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 5-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Comets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
