Softball Game Preview: Holy Cross Indians vs. Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds

The Holy Cross Indians will head out to square off against the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Holy Cross sitting on three straight victories and Newport Central Catholic on four.

On Saturday, Holy Cross needed a bit of extra time to put away Lloyd Memorial. They skirted past the Juggernauts 4-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Indians have posted against the Juggernauts since April 27, 2018.

Evie Thomas spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 15 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Jordyn Rieselman was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Urlage, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Meanwhile, Newport Central Catholic got the win against St. Henry on Thursday by a conclusive 18-3. The result was nothing new for the Thoroughbreds, who have now won six games by eight runs or more so far this season.

Holy Cross' victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-8-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Newport Central Catholic, their record is now 7-4.

Holy Cross might still be hurting after the 23-3 loss they got from Newport Central Catholic in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
