League recap: Booker T. Washington climbs in state rankings with win

5A Region 2 recap Sept. 26, 2012

Booker T. Washington moved up to 282 from 341 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region 2. A 20-13 win over the Golden Eagles helped the Golden Eagles improve their standing.

Russell extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Valley, 30-3. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Wildcats.

Trey Johns and Thomas Ford gave Eufaula a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Johns threw for 55 yards and two touchdowns, while Ford ran for 116 yards. Xavier Woodson also contributed to the rushing game with 74 yards on the ground.

JOSHUA MEIGS provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Rams fell to Russell. He completed eight passes for 74 yards and also ran for 84 yards. MEIGS's favorite target this week was CEDRIC CHAMBERS, who caught four passes for 44 yards.

Valley's MEIGS and DAVION BAILEY have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. MEIGS has thrown for 566 yards this season, while BAILEY, a 5-foot-6 receiver, has 12 catches for 198 yards. JEFF HINES's team's Briquez Alvies leads the league in rushing yards with 300.

Russell County was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in 5A Region 2. The Warriors vanquished the Warriors 48-0 earlier in the week.
