The Cannon Cougars will take on the Concord Academy Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cannon has given up an average of 7.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Last Thursday, Cannon came up short against Gaston Christian and fell 11-6. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mason Mierzwa and Grogan Kelley stepped up to the plate in a big way. Mierzwa scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Kelley got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two RBI. That's the most RBI Kelley has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Deven Datta, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, while it was Concord Academy who put the first points on the board on Thursday, it was Corvian Community who put up more. Concord Academy fell just short of Corvian Community by a score of 4-3.
Noah Hatley put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base.
Hatley wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Teagan Jordan, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases. Kade Brown was another, scoring a run while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Cannon's defeat dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Concord Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 1-3.
Concord Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Cannon has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .483. It's a different story for Concord Academy, though, as they've only averaged .336. Will they be able to contain Cannon's hitters?
Cannon skirted past Concord Academy 4-3 in their previous meeting back in March of 2023. Will Cannon repeat their success, or does Concord Academy have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
