Basketball Recap: Arrupe Jesuit Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Manuel Loya and Mario Cabrera

Arrupe Jesuit has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They took a 49-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Englewood Pirates on Thursday. The Generals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Pirates apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Arrupe Jesuit's loss came despite strong showings from Mario Cabrera and Manuel Loya. Cabrera went 5 for 12 on his way to 11 points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals, while Loya went 5 of 12 en route to 12 points and four steals. Cabrera is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Xavier Martinez, who posted seven points along with six boards and four steals.

Soren Singer had a dynamite game for Englewood, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 18 rebounds. With that strong performance, Singer is now averaging an impressive 8.5 boards per game. Nathan Owens was another key player, putting up eight points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals.

Arrupe Jesuit's loss dropped their record down to 11-5. As for Englewood, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-10 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Arrupe Jesuit has already played their next matchup (against Alameda), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Englewood will face off against Middle Park at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Middle Park will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Englewood surely won't give up without a fight.
