Baseball Recap: Dirigo Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Dirigo had lost three straight, but after bumping their record up to 3-6 on Monday that streak is in the rearview. They walked away with a 6-1 win over the Winthrop Ramblers. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Cougars also won the last time the pair played back in June of 2025.

Trevor Crosby was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in June of 2025. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Dirigo's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 1-5 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Ty LaPointe was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Caden Hutchinson was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.

As for Winthrop, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season. The game marked their lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

On Winthrop's side, Drew Mertzel was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Mertzel has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

Looking ahead, Dirigo will take on Cony at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Winthrop, they will be playing at home against Mount Abram at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
