Baseball Recap: Hawthorne Has No Trouble Against Wildwood

Hawthorne's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Monday. They were the clear victor by a 14-5 margin over the Wildwood Wildcats. Considering the Hornets have won five games by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Brody McAuley and Tison Thomas made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, McAuley pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Thomas struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. McAuley has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. At the plate, McAuley scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Thomas went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, two doubles, and one RBI. The dominant performance gave McAuley a new career-high in runs.

In other batting news, Ethan Thomas was incredible, going 3-for-5 with two triples, four RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Branson Byrd, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Hawthorne was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Hawthorne now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Wildwood, they dropped their record down to 1-9 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.

Coming up, Hawthorne will take on Crescent City at 7:30 p.m. on March 25th. As for Wildwood, they will challenge Freeport at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wildwood will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
