Preview: Fike Demons vs. Smithfield-Selma Spartans
Fike is 9-1 against Smithfield-Selma since November of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. The Fike Demons just played last night, but they'll still head out to face the Smithfield-Selma Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on February 7th. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Fike has eight straight wins, Smithfield-Selma has 36 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Tuesday, Fike had just enough and edged C.B. Aycock out 38-36. Given Fike's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 110th, while C.B. Aycock is ranked 305th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Fike's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Emory Skinner, who scored 14 points. Jewel Brewington was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Meanwhile, Smithfield-Selma took a serious blow against Hunt last Tuesday, falling 59-18. Smithfield-Selma was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-8.
Fike's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-3. As for Smithfield-Selma, their loss dropped their record down to 0-16.
Everything came up roses for Fike against Smithfield-Selma in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 as the team secured a 69-7 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Fike since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
