Basketball Recap: Wellington-Napoleon Comes Up Short

Wellington-Napoleon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were dealt an 83-37 loss at the hands of the Richmond Spartans. The Tigers lost against the Spartans in their previous head to head back in January of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 78-54 score last time.

When it comes to explaining why Wellington-Napoleon lost, don't look at Jonny Hampton. Despite the final result, he posted 14 points. Hampton continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Maddox Blystone also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Even though they lost, Wellington-Napoleon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Richmond's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gabriel Johnson led the charge by dropping a double-double on 20 points and ten boards. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 16 or more in the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Nolan Quick, who scored 15 points and four steals.

Wellington-Napoleon's defeat dropped their record down to 2-12. As for Richmond, their record now sits at 11-2.

Wellington-Napoleon will face off against East at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Richmond, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Lafayette County at 7:00 p.m. on February 4th.
