Football Recap: Arroyo Grande Comes Up Short + How To Watch

While it was all tied up 14-14 at halftime, Arroyo Grande was not quite Newbury Park's equal in the second half on Friday. They and the Panthers were almost perfectly matched up, but they suffered a 28-27 defeat. The Eagles lost against the Panthers in their previous head to head back in August of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 35-7 score last time.

When it comes to explaining why Arroyo Grande lost, don't look at Caleb Clark. Despite the final result, he picked up 119 receiving yards and one touchdown. The bulk of those receiving yards came from one huge play: a catch that gained an incredible 72 yards.

Arroyo Grande didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Anders Winter, Leelynd Dean, and Levi Childers picked up one apiece.

Newbury Park's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Matthew Curry led the charge by picking up 171 receiving yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Brady Smigiel, who threw for 299 yards and one TD while completing 76.3% of his passes.

Arroyo Grande's record now sits at 0-2. As for Newbury Park, their win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-1.

Looking ahead, Arroyo Grande will take on San Luis Obispo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Newbury Park, they will face off against Pacifica at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
