Basketball Recap: Prairie Central Hawks vs. Hoopeston Cornjerkers

Prairie Central took care of business in their home opener on Monday. They came out on top against the Hoopeston Cornjerkers by a score of 58-49. The Hawks have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Cornjerkers, too.

Simon Zimmerman was a one-man wrecking crew for Prairie Central as he went 7 for 13 en route to 19 points plus six rebounds and six steals. What's more, Zimmerman also posted a 54% field goal percentage, which is the highest he's posted since back in November of 2023. Cody Steidinger was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.

Despite the defeat, Hoopeston saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Nick Cardenas went 5 for 11 en route to 16 points plus five rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Cole Miller, who posted six points in addition to six rebounds.

Prairie Central has already played their next match, a 48-34 win against Iroquois West on the 26th. Hoopeston has also already played their next game, a 61-49 loss against Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley on the 26th.
