Softball Recap: Payne Tech Has No Trouble Against Caldwell

Payne Tech never let their opponents score on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Caldwell Chiefs with a sharp 14-0 win. Considering the Lions have won eight contests by more than seven runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Leidy Soto Leyba made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Leilani Oyola, who went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since April 3rd. Another player making a difference was J Castro, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Payne Tech has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Caldwell, they dropped their record down to 3-8-1 with the loss, which was their fifth straight at home.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Payne Tech will head out to face off against West Orange at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Caldwell, they will venture away from home to square off against Boonton at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
