Basketball Recap: Thomas Sumter Academy Triumphs

Calhoun Academy came into Friday's matchup looking for another win against Thomas Sumter Academy, but Malayia English wouldn't allow it. The Thomas Sumter Academy Generals secured a 38-32 W over the Calhoun Academy Cavaliers on Friday thanks in part to English, who posted 18 points and seven steals. That makes it eight consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Thomas Sumter Academy's points.

Ronia Sanders was another key player, putting up four points and nine steals. Thomas Sumter Academy is 5-1 when Sanders posts three or more steals, but 4-6 otherwise.

Layla Walker and Natalie Quattlebaum certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Walker scored 12 points, while Quattlebaum earned six points.

Thomas Sumter Academy's victory bumped their record up to 9-7. As for Calhoun Academy, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-17 record this season.

Coming up, Thomas Sumter Academy is taking a road trip to take on Orangeburg Prep at 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Orangeburg Prep will roll in looking for their 15th straight win, something Thomas Sumter Academy surely won't give up without a fight. Calhoun Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
