Baseball Game Preview: Holcomb Longhorns vs. Goodland Cowboys

The Holcomb Longhorns will head out to challenge the Goodland Cowboys at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Holcomb knows how to get runs on the board -- the squad has finished with ten runs or more in their past seven matches -- so hopefully Goodland likes a good challenge.

On Monday, Holcomb got the win against Spearville by a conclusive 12-2. The victory continues a trend for the Longhorns in their matchups with the Lancers: they've now won five in a row.

Meanwhile, Goodland entered their tilt with Ulysses on Tuesday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They walked away with a 6-2 win over the Tigers.

Kaleb Williams made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Williams wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Braylon Mull, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That stolen base was Mull's first of the season. Another was Jared Quain, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Holcomb pushed their record up to 13-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Goodland, the victory got them back to even at 6-6.

Holcomb skirted past Goodland 1-0 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Longhorns since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
