Providence Day hasn't had much luck against Cannon recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Providence Day Chargers are taking a road trip to challenge the Cannon Cougars at 5:30 p.m. Providence Day is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.
Providence Day can't be too worried about heading out to take on Cannon: they just beat Charlotte Country Day School at home, who had been dominant on their own court up to that point. Everything went Providence Day's way against Charlotte Country Day School on Saturday as Providence Day made off with a 60-36 victory. The Chargers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 22 points or more this season.

Providence Day's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ginny Anne Dumont led the charge by dropping a double-double on 16 points and 12 boards. The dominant performance gave Dumont a new career-high in rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Julia O?Malley, who made all 5 shots she took to post 11 points and seven rebounds.
Providence Day smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, it was close, but two weeks agoCannon capped 2024 with a 62-60 win over Rolesville. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while the Rams are ranked 57th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Providence Day better keep an eye on Madison Drayton. She was instrumental in Cannon's win, dropping a double-double on 24 points and 11 boards. Maya Mccorkle was another key player, putting up nine points and three steals.
Cannon's record is now 14-5. As for Providence Day, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Providence Day has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Cannon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 32.8 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Providence Day came up short against Cannon in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, falling 62-51. Can Providence Day avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
