Softball Recap: Paul VI Drops Season-High Score on the Academy of the Holy Cross

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Paul VI). They blew past The Academy of the Holy Cross Tartans 22-1 on Monday. Winning may never get old, but the Panthers sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Elizabeth Sullivan made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Natalie Monroe was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Another player making a difference was McKenna Drawbaugh, who scored three runs while going 2-for-2.

Paul VI always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .658. They are 5-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Paul VI's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-6. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for The Academy of the Holy Cross, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Looking ahead, Paul VI will challenge St. Mary's Ryken at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Knights' pitching crew has only allowed 1.3 runs per game this season, so the Panthers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for The Academy of the Holy Cross, they will face off against Bishop Ireton at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
