Volleyball Recap: Start Spartans vs. Woodward Polar Bears
If Start was riding high off their 3-0 takedown of Waite last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Spartans fell just short of the Woodward Polar Bears by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday. While the Spartans didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Polar Bears 25-12 in the first set.
Start actually scored more points across those five sets (104-95), but sadly they still had to settle for second. Once all was said and done, the final set scores wound up at 12-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 16-14.
Start's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ramona Smith, who had 21 digs and two assists. Another player making a difference was Jaydence Venegas, who had 11 assists, four digs, and four aces.
Start has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last seven games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season. As for Woodward, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 9-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Start will square off against North Baltimore at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Woodward, they will challenge Horizon Science Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
