Fike had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Smithfield-Selma Spartans on Tuesday, sneaking past 3-2. Surprisingly, this marked the Golden Demons' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Smithfield-Selma's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kaylie Gilyardi, who had nine kills and two aces.

Smithfield-Selma dropped their record down to 0-2 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.

Fike didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 3-1 loss against Wake Prep Academy on the 14th. As for Smithfield-Selma, they have also already played their next matchup, a 3-2 defeat against Knightdale on the 14th.
