Wendell Carter Jr. said he went to Duke to be a sponge.

"I just want to grow my mind and my body," he told MaxPreps host Chris Stonebraker at the 2017 McDonald's All-American game.

The 6-foot-10, 260-pound freshman forward has grown nicely, with averages of 13.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the 26-7 Blue Devils, who open the NCAA Tournament on Thursday against Iona.

Carter averaged 22.7 points and 15.7 points per game as a senior at Pace Academy (Atlanta), earning third team MaxPreps All-American honors.
