Softball Game Preview: Fairmont Firebirds vs. Goshen Warriors

The Fairmont Firebirds will head out to challenge the Goshen Warriors at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Fairmont's pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so Goshen's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Fairmont fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Springboro on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Firebirds have suffered against the Panthers since April 18, 2019.

Jaylin Turner put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over 8.1 innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off 13 hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.

Turner wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Perdue, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, Goshen suffered their biggest defeat since April 18, 2024 on Wednesday. They came up short against Western Brown, falling 9-1. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Warriors' biggest loss of the season was also their lowest-scoring.

This is the second loss in a row for Fairmont and nudges their season record down to 5-3. Even worse, they were so close both times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Goshen, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-3.
